Sand tray Therapy is an expressive and projective intervention for people of all ages. It can be particularly helpful for those who are nonverbal, and anyone who has difficulty verbalizing their emotional experience. It can be practiced in tandem with other forms of therapy, including
traditional "talk therapy."
In a Sand tray session, an individual creates their own microcosm that is a reflection of his/her own life. Because the miniature world is expressed through symbolism and metaphor, the individual may not be consiously aware of their projections. However, the concrete nature of these projections affords the opportunity to resolve conflicts, remove obstacles, and gain self-acceptance.
Sand tray therapy has an advantage of being a conservative yet progressive approach. There is a reduced potential for emotional distress or re-traumatization, and the results are maximized due to a person's emotional experience being processed in a non-threatening way.
